Philips Arena is ALWAYS empty!

Last night the Boston Bruins went into Atlanta and opened a can of black and gold whoop ass. The problem here is that no one was around to watch it. If you caught the game on NESN last night, you would've noticed that the lower bowl in the Philips Arena was virtually empty. I wish I could say I'm not shocked, but this may have been the biggest game in Atlanta's franchise since they made the playoffs in the 2006-07 season. People make a big deal about teams like Phoenix and Tampa who have a hard time drawing fans, but this is absolutely ridiculous. According to this ESPN.com attendance report, Atlanta is second to last in attendance this year, selling about 72.8% of their tickets this year. What may be even more disturbing is that the Coyotes are last and their virtually in the playoffs.

Attendance numbers aside, the Bruins looked to get back on track and start a winning streak with the season coming to a quick close. The Bruins have created a little breathing room for themselves now because the win over Atlanta has given Boston a three point cushion for 8th place. In fact, the win also brings Boston within one point of the 6th place Flyers who aren't playing exceptional hockey at the moment. Something's Bruin will have a playoff breakdown coming soon.

Last night though the Bruins used offense and strong goaltending to push Atlanta around, something we here at SB didn't think would happen. Honestly, I thought the game was going to be close, but I was happily wrong. David Krejci (15), Milan Lucic (8), Miroslav Satan (6) and Steve Begin (4) all tallied goals for Boston while Tuukka Rask stood tall between the pipes. Rask stopped all 27 shots he faced and did not look flustered or even pressured while doing it. Every moment was smooth and his rebounds were moderate, which is good thing to see.

The Bruins certainly looked good last night and even kept their discipline in check, acquiring two penalties. I will say that a "to many men on the ice" penalty is unforgivable and should never happen. Ever since Dave lewis was behind the bench it seems that Boston has had trouble with keeping the correct amount of men on the ice at one time. What gives?

Anyway, the Bruins have another big game on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. A win and a loss by either Philadelphia and/or Montreal will boost the Bruins past the 8th place spot.

The B's did look good last night though. It was good to see Tuukka finally get a shutout. Maybe they can get some momentum going and get their collective shit together and possibly get a 5 or 6 seed in the playoffs.

On a lighter note, not only are the Coyotes gonna be in the playoffs, they might be the 1 seed and nobody in Arizona has a clue! This is classic. It's exactly what happened to the Rays when they made the MLB playoffs 2 years ago. Nobody goes to the regular season games, but once the team sniffs success, ticket sales go through the roof (for the playoffs) and jerseys, hats and everything else with a team logo on it flies off the shelves. (See: Tampa Bay Lightning in 03-04 and Anaheim in 06-07.) I understand that there are teams in markets that might not be hockey crazy, but with they way people move around the country these days, especially from the East to the West Coast, you would think hockey would have a better following in the south and west. Stuff like this makes me happy that I live in Boston. Go B's.
