Is this for real? Is Peter Chiarelli going to come out on April 1st and say to everyone "I'm just kidding, I actually didn't extend our worst defenseman. You silly bananas!"? No, he's not. This is for real. According to Pierre Lebrun of ESPN.com (you know, the same douche who was tweeting bullshit about the Bruins during the Pens/Bruins game), the Bruins have extended Andrew Ference for three season @ $2.25M per season.
This deal is FUCKING HORRIBLE! Why Chiarelli believes its good is totally beyond me but it only goes to prove the string of bad money deals from Chiarelli will continue. Many can look at the Wideman deal ($4M in 2010-11 and $4.5 in 2011-12), Lucic extension ($4M in 2010-11, $4M in 2011-12 and $4.25M in 2012-13) and certainly the Tim Thomas deal ($6M this season, $6M in 2010-11, $5M in 2011-12 and $3M in 2012-13) as bad extensions, but to me, this Ference deal takes the cake.
A lot of people consider me a "hater" because I don't don the black and gold glasses while wearing my Jeremy Jacobs jersey and waving around my Milan Lucic pom-poms, but if there is one player on this roster I absolutely despise, it is Andrew Ference. Tim Thomas? Meh, whatever, Chiarelli fucked that one up. This deal though, may take my hate cake. Ference hasn't played a full season since the 2005-2006 campaign with the Flames and hasn't played 60+ games since then. His highest total was 59 in the 2007-2008 campaign, though he could hit 60 games if he plays the rest of the season. On injuries alone, Ference doesn't deserve this kind of deal.
Since he came to the Bruins, Ference has played in 182 games with Boston out of a possible 544 and has battled a ton of injuries, with a nagging groin being the most recent. This next offseason will also mark the second time in two years that Ference needs surgery on said groin. A lot of people will point out that Ference is a good defensemen when he is healthy, but when is that really going to happen? This trend of injuries is disturbing enough that I wouldn't give a player $2.25M a season knowing he won't fully make 60+ games.
Unfortunately his totals aren't any better. In those 182 games for Boston, Ference has 3 goals (zero this year), 39 assists, 42 points and a plus/minus of -16. Yikes. I guess if the Bruins get rid of Wideman's contract, or even Hunwick's, I'm okay with the deal but a lot of my hatred for it comes under the guise that Stuart and/or Boychuk may not be coming back now. Ference's contract makes losing Seidenberg's a wash because Sides is making @ $2.25M now.
You know, on the other hand, I refuse to go into contract talks because we have no idea what the offseason brings. As of this moment, I hate this contract signing and Andrew Ference can go to hell. At least the guy on the Dropkick Murphys can keep wearing that shitty Ference jersey.
Bob Barker, your thoughts on the subject?
