The Ottawa Senators once again came into the TD Garden and defeat the struggling Bruins. FOr the second time in a week, Ottawa defeated Boston and the Bruins fell to ninth place in the Eastern Conference, now out of the playoffs (should the season end today). Although it wasn't the 5-1 drubbing like Martin Luther King Day, a 2-1 loss still stung the Bruins faithful.
Ottawa is on fire as they have now won their last six games while Boston is struggling to stay in playoff contention in the East. Less than a week ago Boston had the fifth spot in the East, but are now currently sitting in ninth.
Tim Thomas was good in net for the Bruins, stopping 21 of 23 shots. Brian Elliot was excellent in net for the Senators, stopping 33 of 34 shots. Both goalie played well, but the Senators got help from their two better scorers, Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza.
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
The Good
Dan Paille. Paille has been on a tear lately, notching a point in his last 5 games. Yesterday he scored on a bullet that went top glove side on Elliot, who had no shot of saving it. Paille also would have assisted on a Mark Recchi goal, but it was deemed kicked in, which disallowed it. Paille has been a work horse for the Bruins and is beginning to show his drive and compete level, which is something the Bruins need.
Discipline. The Bruins only had one penalty yesterday afternoon, which is a good sign. Lately the Bruins have relied on their penalty kill to get them out of sticky situations and that's been a detriment to the team.
The Bad
Ability. I hate to write this, I really do, but their ability to score is virtually gone. Yesterday Boston was able to put 34 shots on the Senators and only one of those shots hit the back of the twine. Where is the scoring ability? Where are the 20+ goal scorers? As I write this, the Bruins have four players (Sturm, Bergeron, Wheeler and Ryder) who have ten or more goals. If they are to compete in the East, a bad East at that, they will need to put the puck in the net. Is it bad luck? Did players overachieve last year? Who knows.
The Ugly
Offense. Once again the offense was abysmal as the Bruins couldn't put any pucks in the net. I just don't know what to say about this offense anymore, but it's ugly. Very ugly.
