The Boston Bruins squared off against the Ottawa Senators yesterday afternoon at the Garden, but I'm not sure if the Bruins knew it. Boston came out playing very sluggish in the first period and continued to play that way throughout the game as Daniel Alfredsson beat the Bruins by himself with a natural hat trick. The Senators won 5-1.
Tim Thomas started for the Bruins, but was chased in the second period and Tuukka Rask handled the goaltending duties from there on out. Thomas made 6 saves on the 9 shots he faced....6 SAVES ON 9 SHOTS!? Rask came in and stopped 15 of 17 and both goalies didn't look sharp.
Quick note on Tim Thomas, towards the end of the first period he made a save and the crowd gave him a very sarcastic cheer, to which Thomas angrily slapped the puck away. When asked about it, Thomas said "They paid their money. They can do what they want. But I don't have to like it" (thanks to Joe Haggerty for that). The Thomas/fan reaction is definitely something to watch as Thomas may come to find what many Red Sox players have said throughout the years regarding Boston, its media and its fans.
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
The Good
Nothing. Seriously, what was good from yesterday's game? Only 5 Bruins finished the game with a positive +/-, and our Vezina winning goaltender was chased from the game. Hell, Thomas let in 2 goals on 3 shots in the first period. That equals of a save percentage of...33.33%!
The Bad
Discipline. The Bruins amassed 6 penalties in the game against Ottawa and managed to kill off 5 of them. Penalties weren't the only area where the Bruins lacked discipline. There were three goals that were directly effected by the poor play of Dennis Wideman and it seemed that the Bruins just gave up at times. They were lazy, that's for sure.
The Ugly
EVERYTHING! The Bruins were horrible yesterday. From the offense to the defense to the goal tending, everything was garbage. Obviously the team was tired, but this isn't the first time we've watched this team play like junk. There have been numerous times this season were we've watched these guys give up in periods and end up losing games (see: LA Kings).
Win of the Night
Shutting this horrible game off and playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. At least I was able to go 11-0 on two separate occasions and raised my K/D to 1.11.
Stat of the Night
Yesterday was the third time Tim Thomas was pulled this season.
