Weekend Wrap-Up [10.31/11.1]

This weekend, between the gorge session on Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and "fun size" M&Ms, the Boston Bruins actually played some hockey. The degree of that play, however, was anything but consistent.Let's take a look at the weekend, though they will be shortened recaps.

Saturday:

tuukka-rask

Tuukka Rask and the Bruins shut out the Edmonton Oilers 2-0 on Halloween. The Bruins played great, especially the third line of Vladimir Sobotka, Dan Paille and Blake Wheeler. Rask stopped all 19 shots he faced for the second shutout of his career.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly:

The Good:

BVD Line: Hell yes, an underwear reference! Anyways, the Blake Wheeler, Vladimir Sobotka and Dan Paille line played exceptionally well on Saturday. This line was able to score both goals and it was Sobotka grinding up against the boards to help score the first one. Sobotka also put the puck in the net in the waning seconds of the second period, but the horn did sound before the puck went in. Quite a tease indeed.

Tuukka Rask: God damn, this kid is good. Sure, the Oilers suck, but that doesn't mean that Rask doesn't deserve the accolades he's been given. Rask stopped 19 shots for his second shutout of his career and looked like he saw every shot. There was no scramble for a save (see: Tim Thomas), there was no "fish out of water" feel, there was just a goalie standing tall and making the saves he needed to make.

The Bad:

Power Play: Holy shit, this power play is down right dreadful. I'm not sure why, but the Bruins were unable to get anything done on the man advantage. They looked confused, out of place and overall, pathetic.

The Ugly:

Edmonton Oilers: Just didn't play a good game, at all.

Win of the Night (well day):

Hulk Hogan costume. I was sitting there, waiting for play to happen on the ice when I heard "Real American" over the sound system and a guy dressed as Hulk Hogan doing the whole Hogan speel. It was epic and the high point of the costumes for me.

Picture of the Night (well day):

The wife got a picture of Milan Lucic doing an interview with NESN.

Sunday:

I'll admit it, I didn't watch the game on Sunday because I was working 16 hours and the juveniles that I oversee wanted to watch football. That's ok, I get it. Juvenile delinquents don't watch hockey. Due to this, there isn't much I can comment over than the text message I received during the game from my brother such as:

Brother over BBM:
"What the hell are they doing?"
"It looks like they want to lose."
"Their power play is about effective as a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest."
"They suck."

So I take it from my season-ticker holder in the family that the game wasn't that good. The New York Rangers shut out the Bruins 1-0 as Henrik Lundqvist turned away 29 shots for his first shutout of the season. Marion Gaborik scored the lone goal of the game for the Rangers.

The Bruins went 0 for 5 on their power play, which now has a 12.2% success rate on the man advantage. That ranks the Bruins 29th in the NHL, ahead of Florida (11.1%). I'll be blogging about their power play at some point today.

Rask now has 2 shutouts and has only played 8 NHL games. Pretty impressive.
