Ok so we're a little over 1/3 through the way of the 09/10 NHL season so I feel that this is plenty of time to start talking about it; If Tuuk Nukem keeps this play up, does he have a shot at the Calder?
Since acquiring Rask from Toronto straight up for Andrew Raycroft (Thanks JFJ!), Tuuks has been our goalie of the future. The B's did the right thing and took their time developing Rask and that patience has payed off sooner than I think a lot of us thought it would. Rask has stepped up and played magnificently for the B's and is a big reason why this team is keeping pace at the top of the Northeastern division thus far. A quick look at his stats has him sitting second in the league behind Buffalo's Ryan Miller in both GAA (1.97) and save percentage (.932). Rask has also managed one shutout so far. Now, one should not forget that this season is not Rask's first taste at the NHL. He played 4 games for the Bruins in 07/08 and one game for the black and gold in 08/09. Because of his limited action, Rask is still considered a rookie for this season. A player has to have played 25 games before he is not considered a rookie in the following season.
I really don't think this years Calder is as cut and dry as the media (at least up here in the great white north) made it out to be prior to the beginning of this season. John Tavares, many of whom thought would run away with the rookie of the year honours, is having a fine year with the Islanders with 15 goals and 12 assists through 35 games. Avalanche phenom Matt Duchene has 9 goals and 11 assists through 36 game. Rask's top competition amongst goalies is Semyon Varlamov of the Washington Capitals. Varlamov has appeared in 16 games for the Caps (Rask has 14 appearances) and has won 12 (Rask has 9 wins) with a save percentage of .924 and a GAA of 2.21. These are just a couple of examples of the competition Rask is going up against.
So the question remains, if Tuukka Rask continues to play as well as he has, can he bring home the Calder trophey? At this point, I'd say he definitely has a shot and he has the numbers to back it up but I think in the end, Tavares would win it simply because he's expected to win it and he's playing on a much weaker team than Rask, so long as he keeps up his impressive play as well.
